Bursting strength test or Mullen test is a widely conducted test that is conducted to determine the maximum amount of force that a material can bear without rupture and damage. The direction of the application of the force is perpendicular to the plane of the material. Generally, the force is applied on the specimen using hydraulic arrangement and a diaphragm. The bursting strength of the materials gives an idea of the amount of force that it can bear without facing failure.

Procedure to Conduct Bursting Strength Test

The Bursting strength test is conducted through a testing instrument called bursting strength tester. Bursting strength tester uses rubber diaphragm and lab grade glycerine to exert the bursting pressure on the specimen.

To conduct the tests, first of all, a circular disc of the specimen is to cut out of the sample. Typically, the diameter of the circular disc is supposed to be bigger than the clamp so that the specimen is properly clamped. The clamps are also serrated with bevelled grooves to prevent any chances of slippage.

Once the specimen is placed and clamped properly, the test procedure is started. The force is applied on the specimen by the diaphragm and the amount of force applied is shown on the digital display. As soon as the specimen ruptures, the application of force is stopped. The reading on the screen gives the actual bursting strength of the specimen. This bursting strength tells about the ability of the material to bear the impact that will be exerted on them.

The manufacturers in industries such as packaging industries need this bursting strength to estimate the strength and efficiency of the packaging containers that they will be providing their clients.
